WASHINGTON, Reuters – President Joe Biden will nominate Gary Restaino, Arizona’s top prosecutor, as the interim Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, a White House official stated Wednesday.

Marvin Richardson will continue to be the bureau’s acting director as a deputy Director, the anonymous official said.

At a time of increased gun violence, the ATF personnel changes are timely. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 146 mass shootings in this country last year. Ten of these occurred just recently.

Biden named Steve Dettelbach on April 11th, an Ohioan former U.S. prosecutor, as the head of the agency.
