(Reuters) – Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd (OTC) said Wednesday that it will work with corporate clients to establish a significant corporate sustainable aviation fuel program (SAF) in Asia as companies look to reduce their carbon footprint.

It said that it was working with eight clients, including Standard Chartered (OTC), the insurer AIA Group and HSBC, to encourage SAF usage on business travel as well as air freight departing from Hong Kong International Airport.

As airlines race to reach net-zero emissions targets, and as other companies look for ways to minimize their environmental impacts from operations, this move makes sense.

Augustus Tang (Cathay Chief Executive Officer) stated in a statement that this project “is a first step in transmitting an important demand message to the SAF Supply Chain that there are firm interests in the region.”

Cathay explained that SAF will be made using used cooking oils and animal fats waste. Shell and PetroChina (LON:) will provide fuel.
