WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – President Joe Biden will declare on Thursday that the United States will prohibit Russian-affiliated vessels from American ports. This is the latest move to put pressure Russia for its invasion in Ukraine, according to sources.

More details will be available in a White House proclamation. Reuters first reported that the White House had been considering the ban.

Sources claimed that Russian ships made only a tiny percentage of total traffic in 2021, making them about 1 800 visits. Biden’s administration reviewed the issue extensively to determine if the Russian ban would have any adverse effects on U.S. supplies.

Canada closed its ports to Russian-owned vessels on March 1, and banned them from Canadian waters.

The United States has previously prohibited Russian aircrafts from U.S. aerospace. This action was also taken by Canada and other European nations.
