(Reuters] -Florida legislators approved a bill that would revoke Walt Disney (NYSE:) Co’s independence is widely criticized as a ploy to get rid of a law restricting discussion on LGBTQ topics in schools.

It now goes to Governor Ron DeSantis who almost guarantees to sign the bill. Voting 70 to 38 by the Republican-led House, it was defeated by a special tax district which allowed Disney to manage roughly 25,000 acres of Orlando where its Disney World resort complex is situated. This measure was approved by the state Senate on Wednesday.

DeSantis had, surprise, asked the lawmakers to take up the bill during a special session called by him this week.

It is intended to abolish a few special tax districts such as the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which was located in Orlando. The structure renders Disney, one of the most prominent private employers in the state, as well as other landowners responsible to provide services such water, fire fighting and power. In return, they are exempted from paying taxes and fees.

This change will take effect June 20, 2023.

DeSantis is a Republican and a possible candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. He wants to take aim at Disney’s opposition to a law banning classroom instruction about sexual orientation for children under 9. Last month, the governor signed legislation.

Disney, which was criticized by the LGBTQ community and some Disney employees for not taking a strong stance against the measure at the beginning, condemned the legislation last month, declaring that it would suspend all its Florida political donations. This sparked a torrent of criticism against Disney from many Republicans.

Disney has not yet responded to my request for comment.
