REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes(Reuters] – Stellantis’ Citroen today announced that the C4 Grand SpaceTourer model of its minivans will be discontinued. The line of 30+ years of minivans was a testament to the brand’s familial image, now overshadowed and dominated by SUVs.
The brand released a statement saying that C4 Grand SpaceTourer has now “bowed out” because customers have changed their aspirations.
Minivan sales in France fell to almost zero during the first quarter. SUVs claimed 46% of all new registrations. They are racing against traditional sedans that bring in 47%.
Stellantis announced that the production of C4 Grand SpaceTourer in Vigo (Spain) will cease after the current orders are fulfilled.
Citroen still has two models of electric minivans, but it plans to place more emphasis on the C5 Aircross SUV from Citroen and the large C5X sedan.
The brand has sold almost 4.5 million minivans in 30 years. This was due to the Evasion, C8 and C4 Picasso from 2002. But, perhaps most important, customers loved the Xsara’s and C4 Picasso’s rounded silhouettes as well as their family-friendly designs.
