BERLIN (Reuters), a German flag carrier Lufthansa stated Friday that it was forced to lower the offer of a buy-onboard meal on short and medium-haul flights departing from Frankfurt because Gate Gourmet, its caterer, is experiencing staff shortages.

Our (catering offer) is no longer available for economy on Lufthansa’s flights to Frankfurt. Lufthansa spokeswoman said that the offer is unchanged for long-haul and business classes.

Gate Gourmet’s GateGroup spokesperson stated the issue is limited to very few flights departing Frankfurt Airport, which is mostly a Lufthansa hub. This is due in part to the dearth of German drivers.

The caterer introduced measures to address this issue. For example, a 250 euro bonus was offered to employees who didn’t take any sick days in April.

GateGroup has more than 300 clients in 60 different countries, but no other complaints have been received, according to a spokesperson. The caterer also maintained its punctual performance in Frankfurt of 99% during the hectic Easter holiday period.

Both firms stated that they are in constant contact with each other and work together to improve the situation.
