ZURICH (Reuters), – On Friday, the United Nations Human Rights Office raised alarm about increasing evidence of war crimes committed in Ukraine and urged both Moscow and Kyiv for respecting international law.

Michelle Bachelet of the U.N. Human Rights Office (OHCHR), stated, “Russian Armed Forces have Indiscriminately Shelled And Bombed Peopled Areas, Killing Civilians, and wrecking Schools and Other Civil Infrastructure, Actions that May Count as War Crimes.”

U.N. monitors for human rights in Ukraine also recorded what appears to have been the use of weapons that had indiscriminate consequences, causing civilian casualties by Ukrainian armed force in the eastern part of the country. OHCHR stated in a statement.

Russia describes the incursion of Russia as “special military operations” in order to “denazify and disarm Ukraine. It denies that it targeted civilians, or any war crimes.

OHCHR stated that between the beginning of war and February 24, up to April 20, Ukraine’s monitors had confirmed 5,264 civilian casualties, 2,345 deaths and 2,919 injuries.

Of these, 92.3% were recorded in government-controlled territory. The Russian military and its affiliated groups accounted for 7.7% of all casualties in Donetsk-Luhansk region.

Bachelet explained that the numbers would be even higher if the terrible fighting in Mariupol is revealed.

The scale of the executions of civilians who were previously under Russian occupation is also becoming apparent. She said that evidence preservation and the proper treatment of mortal remains should be guaranteed, along with psychological and other support for victims’ families.”

It said that around 50 civilians were killed in a U.N.-led mission to Bucha, April 9.    

It added that they have been notified of more than 300 claims of the killing of civilians in Sumy, Chernihiv Kharkiv, Kharkiv, and Kyiv. These were all areas under control by Russian armed forces between February and March.
