AMSTERDAM, Reuters – Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport urged passengers to avoid the airport on Saturday as a strike of ground personnel during a school holiday created chaos at Europe’s third busiest airport.

The airport authority issued a statement shortly before noon GMT, saying that the terminal was too full.

According to a spokesperson from the airport, “We regret having to do it but it is necessary for safety.”

On Saturday, police closed highway exits from the airport due to long lines of people waiting for their turn.

It was advised that travelers avoid the airport until 1300 GMT. Airport staff will work with frustrated passengers to help them get on their delayed flights as quickly as possible.

KLM (the Dutch subsidiary of Air France-KLM) baggage handlers had gone on strike on Saturday in a demand for better pay and working conditions.

KLM Ground staff handles approximately half of the baggage that comes through Schiphol. This is Europe’s third most-busy airport after Paris Charles de Gaulle or London Heathrow.

FNV Labour Union said that strike ended at noon.
