Members-only club Chief coming to San Francisco with help of Google

Google parentage comes as companies witness record levels of women quitting their jobs during “the Great Receipt” AlphabetThey are putting their money behind an initiative that may help them to stay.

Chief was founded in 2019 and is a membership-based organization for female executives. It provides meetups, mentorship, fireside chats and mentoring to curated groups.

It has physical space in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. As of the end of last month, it also offers a new service. $100 millionCapitalG, Alphabet’s venture arm. Chief will use the money to open a San Francisco clubhouse this summer. It will include a bar, open space, meeting spaces, call booths, and a moms’ room.

“Tech is such a male-dominated industry so I think it’s a great ability to tap into something that breaks from that mold a little bit more,” Chief co-founder Carolyn Childers told CNBC in an interview. She said San Francisco is the company’s fastest growing city, and “we’ve seen amazing members join from early-stage start-ups to the big tech giants.”

The Covid-19 pandemic bolstered the business as women flocked to Chief’s platform, which served as a support system during a time of solitude. An annual membership costs $5,800 per woman at the level of vice president and $7,900 for C-suite executive. Childers stated that 70% of the members are sponsored through their employer. Members can now pay an extra fee for all access to Chief’s clubhouses. They can hold clients and reserve meeting rooms, as well as connect with others.

‘Lonely at the top’

Lindsay Kaplan and Childers both said Chief is a product of their experience. They had been in high-ranking positions within companies, and were unable to find support. That’s why so many female tech workers leave. studiesThey have.

“We were managing teams and mentoring others but no longer had the resources for ourselves,” Childers said. “It can get really lonely at the top, especially when you’re quite literally the only woman in a room full of men.”

At the start of this year, Chief expanded across the country. Childers and Kaplan estimate that around 60,000 women are on the waiting list. However, they believe they can start interviewing applicants faster because the company is able to spend more money hiring people and building out technology.

Laela SturdyCapitalG’s partner said that CapitalG has an “incredible model of business” and also gained from the timing due to the stresses caused by the pandemic.

“I started hearing about Chief because I have a lot of friends who are senior executive women and execs in my portfolio who were joining Chief and I was honestly impressed by the brand momentum and organic love that chief members were showing,” Sturdy said. “It’s very rare to have members and users talk about a platform that changes their life.”

Childers believes the company has the potential to gain even more momentum after a pandemic, when people crave in-person events.

“When everything went completely digital, the biggest thing is it democratized access,” Childers said. “You didn’t have to be in a specific place. Networks and communities can reap the benefits of having people meet up in person.

The platform hosted members-only fireside conversations with Arielle Gross Samuels (the global head of Meta’sEnvironmental, social, and corporate governance initiatives, as well as former Netflix CMO Bozoma Saint John. These topics include workplace inclusion, work-life balance and more.

Childers stated that it is a diverse community with 35% of its members being BIPOC (Black indigenous people and persons of color).

Take it to businesses

Chief has raised substantial amounts of capital from high-profile venture capitalists. This means that investors expect the company’s growth to be able to justify its tech valuation. General Catalyst, GGV Capital and other backers are also available.

Chief claims that a major way the company plans to expand is to go directly to businesses. Sturdy stated that it might tailor features and programs to meet the specific needs of female executives. This could include a greater focus on professional growth or events.
