REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo(Reuters] – Meta Platforms Inc. will soon open its first store in the physical world where consumers can buy and test virtual reality headsets. The company is attempting to mainstream its much-lauded metaverse.
Meta announced Monday that the 1,550-square-foot Meta Store will open at Burlingame’s California campus on May 9th. It will showcase demos of its Quest 2 VR headset, video calling device Portal and Ray-Ban’s AR glasses.
Except for Ray-Ban glasses and the other devices, they will all be available at the store. According to the company, you can purchase these products online via a new tab at meta.com.
Meta invests heavily in metaverse — a virtual environment where people work, interact and play. Meta will add new features to devices that provide access to the virtual universe.
The Facebook (NASDAQ) owner stated earlier this month that it will begin testing tools to sell digital assets and experiences through its Horizon Worlds virtual reality platform. Horizon Worlds was launched by Meta late last year.
Meta said that it would also charge 47.5% from digital asset creators, an action which was criticized by many app developers.
Retailers in this space eagerly await the Quest 2 VR headset. This is expected to launch during the second quarter. Analysts widely consider it to be critical for the company’s metaverse goals.
