(Reuters). Authorities have identified Christopher Schurr, the officer responsible for fatally shooting Patrick Lyoya (26) in Grand Rapids. He was killed during a traffic stop. The incident occurred just days after mourners and his family requested that he be honoured at a memorial.

“In the interest of transparency, to reduce on-going speculation, and to avoid any further confusion, I am confirming the name already publicly circulating – Christopher Schurr – as the officer involved in the April 4 Officer Involved Shooting,” Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said.

Two weeks ago, law enforcement had made the video footage showing the murder available to the general public. Winstrom said that additional information about the incident will be made public by the department in the latter part of the week.

Schurr is currently in administrative leave as Michigan State Police look into whether Schurr should face criminal charges. While the Department did not specify how long Schurr was on the force for, MLive reports that he’s been there seven years.

Lyoya’s family has called for the police to remove the officer from force and bring criminal charges against him.

Lyoya was driving April 4th, when he was stopped by an officer. He stated that he had checked the license plate of the car and it didn’t match the vehicle according to the video.

Lyoya is seen getting out of her car, seemingly in confusion as the officer repeatedly requests a driver’s licence and tells him to go back into the vehicle.

Lyoya attempted to run away from the officer, as he tried to put him in handcuffs.

After a brief foot chase, Schurr and Lyoya engaged in a grapple on the grass, with one man wrestling with the stun gun officer. The video shows Schurr firing one shot into the back of Lyoya’s head as he drew his pistol while seated on top.

Lyoya was shot by a gun held behind his back, according to an independent autopsy performed by Lyoya’s forensic pathologist.

Protests in Grand Rapids erupted after the death of Lyoya (a Congolese refugee) triggered by protestors who claim it is yet another example of police violence towards young Black men.

Ben Crump, a civil rights lawyer representing the Lyoya families, and Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist for Lyoya’s cause, delivered a tribute to her on Friday.

Crump, referring to the autopsy, stated: “That’s now scientific evidence that this terrible killing was where his family believes it was an execution.”
