(Reuters) – Monday’s arguments before a New York State judge centered on the question of whether President Donald Trump should face contempt charges for failing to produce documents required in a probe into his business practices.

Trump failed to comply with a New York Attorney General subpoena. He also didn’t produce any documents within the court-mandated March 3 deadline. This was later extended by his attorneys to March 31.

Trump, Ivanka Trump, and Donald Trump Jr. were also subpoenaed. They were ordered to give testimony to the attorney General. Although an appeal has been filed for the testimony of Trump and his two adult children, Ivanka Trump Jr. and Donald Trump Jr., the former president consented to the document requirements.

Letitia James, New York State Attorney General, is currently investigating whether Trump Organization, the family-based New York City company of the ex-president, misrepresented the value of real estate properties in order to get favorable loans or tax deductions.

James claimed that James’ probe found significant evidence suggesting that over 10 years, the financial statements of the company “relied upon misleading asset valuations to ensure economic benefits.”

Kevin Wallace from the attorney general’s Office acknowledged Monday that although his office was in a position to acquire some documents under agreement, there were still “significant gaps in” the Trump Organization’s compliance.

Wallace explained that Wallace once said, “It was (like) pulling teeth for documents.”

James requested that Trump is fined 10,000 per day and possibly more until he agrees.

Attorney General has asked how Trump Organization values the Trump brand and properties such as golf clubs in New York, Scotland, and Trump Tower’s penthouse apartment.

Trump, who is Republican, has denied wrongdoing, and called the investigation political motivated. James is a Democrat.
