REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo(Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:), founder Jeff Bezos asked on Twitter (NYSE:), if Elon Musk’s $44 Billion cash deal to purchase Twitter gives China “a little bit of leverage over town square”.
China has blocked Twitter, and Musk, who is also the wealthiest person in the world, holds key business interests.
Musk is a freedom-absolutist who has criticized Twitter’s moderation policies. He reached an agreement to purchase the social media site on Monday.
Musk owning Twitter could mean that political activists will be less strict and allow for the reinstatement of banned individuals, including ex-President Donald Trump.
It is also unclear what this deal means for Twitter’s China content policy, given that Musk’s Tesla (NASDAQ) heavily depends on China to produce and sell its vehicles.
“Did China just get a little leverage over the town square?” Bezos tweeted late on Monday.
My answer is likely not. He later tweeted that complexity in China is more likely than Twitter censorship.
Musk tweeted Monday that he hoped that his worst critics would still be on Twitter. This is free speech.
