GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn brought gun to North Carolina airport

Madison Cawthorn, a representative of North Carolina was charged with a misdemeanor crime for possessing a deadly weapon on city property. She had brought a loaded gun to North Carolina’s airport.

Cawthorn (R-N.C.) was arrested at the airport in his state of residence for having a weapon.

The 26-year-old lawmaker was cited in the latest incident at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Mecklenburg County on Tuesday after Transportation Security Administration workers at a security screening checkpoint detected the gun, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department told WCNC TV in Charlotte.

Police said that David Madison Cawthorn, the gun’s owner was identified by responding CMPD officers.

“Mr. Cawthorn said that the firearm belonged his, and he worked cooperatively with the CMPD officers,” the CMPD stated.

According to police, Mr. Cawthorn was cited for possessing a dangerous weapon on city property. It is an Ordinance of the City of Charlotte.

The CMPD was allowed to take possession of Mr. Cawthorn’s firearm as normal. Unless other felony charges are involved or circumstances exist, the CMPD Airport Division will cite instead of arresting Mr. Cawthorn for the misdemeanor of Possession Of A Dangerous Weapon.

CNBC spoke with Brad Smith, a Charlotte criminal defense attorney who represented people accused of carrying guns at Charlotte Douglas. He said that this is against Charlotte’s ordinances.

Smith stated that while it’s not uncommon for someone to be issued a citation, they will most often be arrested on the spot.

Smith explained that Smith is often arrested and taken to jail more than once.

The lawyer stated that the DA’s office “absolutely prosecutes these cases.”

According to news reports, Cawthorn was allegedly carrying an unloaded firearm when he was stopped by TSA agents at Asheville Regional Airport, North Carolina.

Cawthorn’s spokesperson said that Cawthorn brought the gun with him by accident.
