NEW DELHI, (Reuters) – The U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla (NASDAQ) is allowed to open a shop in India and make vehicles there, as well as exporting them. However, it must refrain from importing cars from China. This was stated by the minister of transport on Tuesday.

Nitin Gandkari, minister of foreign affairs, stated during a conference that making in China isn’t a profitable proposition.

Tesla has been lobbying Indian officials nearly one year for tariff reductions. Elon Musk is a billionaire and Tesla’s chief executive wants India to allow it to import electric vehicles.

Its efforts to stop the slide are in vain as Tesla does not have a clear plan to invest in India. This step would fit with Prime Minister NarendraModi’s “Make in India” vision, which aims to create local jobs and boost manufacturing in India.
