WASHINGTON (Reuters] – U.S. President Joe Biden claimed that American teachers are unfairly being targeted in the “culture wars.” He also warned against book bans in an address at Wednesday’s White House.

Biden spoke at the 2022 National and State Teachers of the Year Award Ceremony. He stated that politicians were trying to gain points by banning books. This apparent reference was made to Republicans and conservatives in Texas and Tennessee.

Biden spoke to the educators, saying that American teachers “have dedicated their lives towards teaching our children and lifting up them.” “We’ve got to stop making them the target of the culture wars. That’s where this is going.”

According to PEN America, over 1,000 books, mostly dealing with racism and LGBTQ issues have been taken from schools libraries across the United States in the past few months.

He also supported U.S. teachers who were criticized by “Moms for Liberty” for the way that they taught about slavery and race in America.

Biden stated that today, too many politicians are trying to make political points by trying to ban books. “Did you ever think when you were teaching you’d be worrying about book burning and banning books all because it doesn’t fit someone’s political agenda?”
