BRUSSELS, (Reuters) – The European Court of Justice rejected Wednesday’s case by Airbnb Ireland against Belgian legislation requiring that it provide tax authorities with information on transactions made in tourism.

It was ruled that the European Union law did not prohibit providers of property intermediary services, and in particular operators of electronic accommodation platforms, from requiring them to send tax authorities details of transactions related to tourist activities.

Airbnb claimed that the restriction violated freedom of service.

In a statement however, the court stated that they had excluded the need from the EU directive regarding electronic commerce because of its fiscal nature.
