(Reuters) – Several companies plan to open production facilities for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries or components in North America and Europe by 2025, as the alternative to nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) cells begins to take root outside China. This is the main story.

Headquarters: Novi, Michigan

Founded: 2020

Status: Private

Products: LFP Battery Packs and Cells

Highlights: Mujeeb (NASDAQ: Founder), a veteran battery expert with stints at Ford and Apple (NASDAQ:), stated that ONE will begin LFP cell pack and packing production in America by 2022. Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Flex (NASDAQ:), are among the investors.

MITRA CHEM

Headquarters: Mountain View, California

Founded: 2021

Status: Private

Products: LFP cathodes

Highlights: Vivas Kumar and William Chueh, co-founders of the company, plan to begin pilot production this year for LFP cathodes. Fontinalis and Social Capital are two of the investors.

24M

Headquarters: Cambridge, Massachusetts

Founded: 2010

Status: Private

Products: LFP, NCM cells and cathodes

Highlights: MIT spinout 24M was co-founded by Yeting Chiang and Throop Wilder, with Craig Carter as its CEO. The company will produce next-generation lithium-ion battery technology using Volkswagen’s cell technology. Freyr is a Norwegian startup that makes lithium-ion batteries. 24M also has a license agreement.

KORE POWER

Headquarters: Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

Founded: 2018

Status: Private

Products: LFP, NCM and NCM Cells

Highlights: Cofounders Lindsay (NYSE) Gorrill & Paul Coombs plan to start making LFP cells and NCM at a Buckeye plant, Arizona in 2024. Novonix is a Halifax-based supplier of battery materials.

AMERICAN BATTERY FACTORY

American Fork (Utah) – Headquarters

Founded: 2021

Status: Private

Products: LFP batteries

Highlights: Paul Charles, the co-founders with Zhenfang G said that the company plans to create a network LFP cell factory networks in the United States. Details will be provided later this year. Ge’s Lion Energy incubated ABF.

FREYR

Headquarters: Mo i Rana, Norway

Founded: 2018

Status: Open

Products: LFP batteries

Highlights: A Norwegian startup that went public in 2020 said it would build LFP battery plants at its new facility near the headquarters. This will be in addition to plans to create a factory for batteries in America by 2030. Glencore, a mining giant (OTC:), is an investor.

FOXCONN

Headquarters: Taipei, Taiwan

Founded: 1974

Status: Open

Products: LFP batteries

Highlights. Also called Hon Hai Precision by Foxconn, Foxconn plans to build electric cars (EVs), at a former General Motors plant (NYSE:) in Ohio. Foxconn has also been developing LFP batteries. Foxconn discussed the possibility of partnering with Vinfast in Vietnam, who plans to construct an EV plant here.

CATL

Headquarters: Ningde, China

Founded: 2011

Status: Open

LFP Batteries and Cells

Highlights: Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd., the largest manufacturer of EV batteries in the world, plans to build an LFP manufacturing facility in Erfurt (Germany) this year. Foxconn, Honda Motor and Honda Motor are key investors.

GUOXUAN/GOTION

Headquarters: Hefei, China

Founded: 2006

Status: Open

LFP Batteries and Cells

Highlights: Guoxuan, also called Gotion in China, is planning to open an LFP-powered battery plant in Salzgitter (Germany) in 2025 together with Volkswagen, its partner. The company has also announced that it plans to construct a comparable facility in the United States.

SVOLT

Founded: 2018

Status: Private

LFP Batteries and Cells

Highlights: Svolt, a spinoff from China’s Great Wall Motor is planning to open an LFP-powered battery plant in Germany’s Saarland by 2023. Stellantis is a key European customer.

BYD

Headquarters: Shenzhen, China

Founded: 1995

Status: Open

LFP Batteries and Cells

Highlights: China’s BYD still has not announced a site or a date for their planned European LFP Battery Plant. Toyota (NASDAQ:), and Tesla (NASDAQ. Warren Buffett was an early investor.

VINFAST

Headquarters: Haiphong, Vietnam

Founded: 2017

Status: Subsidiary

LFP Batteries and Cells

Highlights: VinFast, a subsidiary of Vingroup and VinES Energy Solutions plan to construct LFP batteries at new plants in North Carolina and Vietnam.

ELEVENES

Headquarters: Subotica, Serbia

Founded: 2010

Status: Private

Products: LFP batteries

Highlights: ElevenEs stated that it intends to build an LFP plant in the vicinity of its Subotica headquarters by mid-decade.
