OAKLAND (Calif.) – Alphabet’s Google now accepts people’s requests for the removal of search results containing home addresses, telephone numbers, and email accounts. This is the latest change in Google’s stance on personal privacy and information access.

On Wednesday, the world’s top-used internet search engine said that it had expanded its global removal policies in response to growing user demand and changing norms regarding the danger posed by having easy access contact information.

In an exclusive interview, Michelle Chang, Global Policy Lead for Google Search, stated that research has shown there is more personally identifiable information than users regard as sensitive. They are becoming less willing to accept this kind of content on the internet.”

Google has been refusing to take down webpages that share contact information with a threat or require payment. The company has removed all links to financial accounts, credit cards numbers, and medical records.

The agency has approved approximately 13% of the requests it received in recent years. It had been receiving tens to thousands of such requests every year. Chang stated that she expects the approval rate will increase under expanded rules. These also permit the removal of links to confidential login credentials.

Google older policies permit you to ask for the takedown of unwanted pornography results and personal information that is “inaccurate or inadequate”, irrelevant, inappropriate, or excessive. Google allowed the removal of photographs of minors last year.

Chang indicated that Google’s contact information policy would weigh requests. Google wanted to ensure data is available in the public interests. Information that is “part of the public record” on official or government websites will be retained by Google.

It said that it usually processes requests in a matter of days.

Google drop webpages can still be accessed via other search engines, or directly. Chang stated that users should contact the publishers to fix “the root cause” of the problem.
