Snap launches a $230 flying camera called Pixy

SnapThe company launched a flying camera Thursday at its annual summit of partners.
Pixy the camera is small enough to fit in your pocket. Users tap the button to direct Pixy onto one of four pre-set flightpaths. For photos or videos, Pixy follows the user for a few seconds, as it orbits and floats above him. It then returns to his hand.
Snap calls Pixy a companion for Snapchat’s flagship app. Snapchat Memories automatically receive videos and images from flights, according to Snap. The company said users could edit and share the images to any platform. Pixy can store up to 100 videos and 1,000 photos.
The base flight pack is currently available in France and the U.S. for $229.99 as of Thursday. It includes the Pixy camera with a bumper, carrying strap, charging cable, and a rechargeable lithium battery. The company stated that additional batteries can be purchased for $19.99 or a dual-battery charger for $49.99. With each recharge, the camera is capable of making five to eight flight using its default flight modes.
Snap is no stranger to gadgets. Snap’s augmented reality glasses Spectacles (a $380 product) can overlay computer-generated images on the users field of view. Snap has stated that it will continue to invest in hardware over the long-term, which may open up new revenue streams for its advertising business. The company stated in its last earnings reportHardware revenue today is considered “not material”
It also revealed several features in augmented-reality and updates for developers. Snapchat has reached 600 million active monthly users and more that 330 million active daily users each day, the company said.
