WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Thursday it is considering tightening telemarketing regulations. This includes one that makes it easier to cancel services people don’t want.

Although the rule changes passed unanimously by the commission are known as Telemarketing Rules, most of the discussions during the livestreamed open meeting were about scammers and robocallers.

Telemarketing rules have been enforced by the FTC for many decades. A proposed modification would be to include business-tobusiness plans under the rule. Protections are currently only available for calls that marketers make to consumers.

Lina Khan, FTC Chair, stated that “It is clear that times are changing and the rise in telemarketing scam targeting small businesses in particular really encourages us to revisit this exemption and look into whether or not we should expand the coverage.”

The agency issued an advisory notice about proposed rule-making. It also asked for public comments on how they would tackle tech support scams. These are where people are lured into calling the fraud company.

The FTC as well the Federal Communications Commission are battling robocalls that originate from outside of the United States.
