ISTANBUL, (Reuters) – A Turkish court acquitted 33 individuals, including two Bloomberg journalists and others from local media. They were accused of spreading false information regarding the economy through an article and tweets during the 2018 currency crisis.

Following a BDDK Banking Watchdog filed a criminal case in August 2018, the BDDK filing a complaint in relation to a Bloomberg article describing the impact of sharply falling liras and how banks and authorities responded.

Fercan Yalinkilic was and Kerim Karkaya were being tried over the article. Other defendants, such as journalists Sedef Kabas and Merdan Yanardag and economist Mustafa Sonmez are also on trial.

In 2018, the dollar plunged due to concerns about President Tayyip Turkey’s influence over monetary policies and the deteriorating relationship between Ankara, Washington. The August 2018 low was 7.24 against USD, which is its lowest level since that time.

Erdogan requested a number of rate cuts at the end of the year. This caused another currency crisis. The lira fell as low as 18.4, before recovering. Inflation reached 61% in March thanks to the currency crisis.

The accuseds have always denied all charges.

On Friday, the court found that defendants actions were not criminal and released 33 of them.
