WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On Friday, the U.S. Justice Department submitted a complaint challenging an Alabama law which criminalizes transgender youth receiving gender-affirming care.

Alabama’s Republican governor, John Shelby, signed the bill into law earlier in the month. The bill makes it a felony punishable by up to 10 year imprisonment for providing medical care, including hormone blockers, surgery, and other treatments to align physical characteristics with the gender identity.
