‘Field of Dreams’ for kids of all abilities opens in New Jersey

The RWJBarnabas Health Field of Dreams will be the first of its type in New Jersey.

After nearly five years’ planning, delays due to pandemics and difficulties, the grand opening ceremony of the facility worth $3.6million is finally complete. Toms River will serve children with social and physical disabilities.

Although the grand opening of the complex was a great success, the entire process started out as an utter nightmare. Christian Kane was on the road with his infant son Gavin, 19 months, when a truck from a brewery crashed into his vehicle near Toms River High School North. Gavin sustained a brain injury that left him with a complete skull fracture and right frontal stroke.

However, it was not easy.

Mary Kane was Gavin’s mother. “He wanted everything like the rest of his friends,” she said. He was very weak because he couldn’t hold his head up.

Gavin was a growing child and it became increasingly hard for Gavin to be taken to playgrounds with her to let him take part in activities. They have six children.

It was almost impossible and very difficult for me to convince him that a swing, slide, or other similar activity would be possible, so he refused. Mary Kane stated that he was able to watch the playgrounds, but it wasn’t fun.

Gavin’s parents got tired of him sitting on the sidelines five years ago. Their dream was to create a place where all abilities of children could come together and play. Christian Kane said, “To be capable of doing things that they never thought they would be able.”

Christian Kane is an Advanced Placement Statistics teacher from Toms River High School North. He poured all he could into the project. To build the $3.6million facility, major sponsors and government aid would be necessary. Grants and grants are also required. fundraisingYou can also find specialized equipment for children of all abilities.

Christian Kane claimed that the most difficult challenge came when the pandemic threatened to endanger the whole project. The pandemic caused a dramatic rise in raw material prices and an influx of workers to construct homes.

His explanation was that an item that cost $4 is now going to be donated to charity would have to go up to $12 or $13. “All of the sudden, I start getting bills that I know I have to finance.”

Christian Kane, the owner of the complex, said that groups all across the state have been asking him to take them to the site. CNBC got a look at the building from the Kanes before it officially opened. Gavin, along with some close friends, also had the opportunity to tour the facility for the first-time.

Christian Kane said, “You could hear the children’s pure joy in the background. You knew that they were looking for that,”

This 3.5-acre state-of the-art facility features a basketball court with special materials for wheelchairs, a mini-golf course and a playground catering to wheelchair-bound children. There is also a snack bar, a pavilion and quiet corners that look out onto the woods.

Christian Kane stated, “You’re going to not be stared at or looked at when you arrive here. You know that your goal is pure enjoyment and joy.”

These facilities are praised by doctors as having many important benefits.

Matt McDonald (CEO of Children’s Specialized Hospital), who treats Gavin said, “The ability to be learning, playing and showing off ones abilities outside of hospital is just like important sometimes as medications and therapies that happen within the hospital.”

Gavin was ecstatic to be surrounded by other kids who had similar experiences as he did when he tried the facility out for the first-time. Parents can relax, socialize and share their experiences with families facing similar difficulties.

Christian Kane expressed hope that this is only the beginning. His goal is for others to take the success and value of his property and make similar buildings.

While he drives past the accident site on his way to work every day, he claims that it makes his mornings a lot easier driving by the Field of Dreams.

He said, “Driving past this and watching children and adults play here.” It was worth all the work that went into building this.
