(Reuters) – On Monday, a special grand jury was appointed to examine evidence from a Georgia prosecution’s investigation into Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to affect the 2020 U.S. election results.

The announcement marks a big step forward in this probe. It was initiated after Trump made a Jan. 2, 2020 phone call to Georgia’s secretary, urging her to reverse the state’s unfounded voter fraud claims.

Fani Willis Fulton County District Attorney asked for the special jury January because of its subpoena authority, which she claims is required to compile witness testimony.

Jeff DiSantis Jr., the deputy district attorney responsible for media relations, stated that Monday’s selection consisted of three alternates and 23 jurors.

A special grand jury may investigate and then suggest charges to a regular jury. This would decide whether or not to indict.

During the telephone call, Trump urged Brad Raffensperger of Secretary State, a Republican, “find enough votes” to reverse his Georgia loss.

Trump said to Raffensperger, “I want to find 11,780 voters,” in the transcription of the conversation. That is how Trump was able to win Georgia.

Trump denied any wrongdoing during the telephone call.

According to legal experts, Trump’s calls to his phone may have been in violation of at least three state electoral laws. They were: conspiration to commit fraud, criminal solicitation and intentional interference with the performance of election duties.
