Minecraft Developers Sign Petition Against Gaming NFTs.

Slowly, but surely tensions are developing between crypto enthusiasts and game developers.

‘Climate Replay’, a collective formed from core developers of Minecraft’s Mojang Studios, have initiated an NFT pledge, stating the supposed risks and dangers of NFTs and cryptocurrencies.

These are the main arguments that were presented by developers to this NFT petition:

  • Gaming communities aren’t well-suited for play-to-earn. These games allow players to fulfill quests and complete tasks in order to earn crypto. They are rapidly growing in popularity. This petition is aimed at ensuring that games are fun, not work.
  • The gaming industry is vulnerable to hacks and frauds using cryptocurrency. Axie Infinity’s Ronin Bridge scam is one of the most notorious recent acts, totalling $600 million in losses for the gamer community.
  • The environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining is huge. Climate Replay states that crypto mining consumes an enormous amount of electricity. However, Ethereum’s blockchain is already working on leaving significantly less carbon footprint and the system is planned to be upgraded by the end of August 2022.

The Pledge is not being taken seriously by the IT industry

A representative of Climate Replay, Cory Scheviak said ‘Our hope is that we can spread this around the industry and get as many companies and individuals as possible to sign’. Climate Replay was unable to gather 72 signatures despite releasing an anti-NFT pledge on Monday.

It seems that the in-game backlash against NFTs from developers is quickly diminishing. Not all gaming industry professionals share this opinion with the Minecraft developers. NFTs are seen by many entrepreneurs, such as Jeff Danley, as a necessary part of the future for gaming.
