Automobile giant StellantisThe company announced Monday that it will spend $2.8 billion on two Ontario factories in order to produce electric and hybrid cars. This is the latest in its $35 billion plan.

It will be possible for the automaker, which is using new multi-energy architectures to create hybrid or fully electric versions of several of their upcoming models. It will add a battery laboratory to its Windsor research and development center, which will create 650 jobs.

In 2023, the company will begin retooling their Windsor, Ontario assembly plant. The modernization and revamp of another plant in Brampton (Ontario) is planned for 2024. They will both be back in operation by 2025.

These investments were made as part of an overall electrification reform announced earlier in the year. Stellantis plans to sell 5 million EVs annually by 2030This total will cover all the European vehicles and the half-million North American light-duty and passenger trucks.

Global automakers are making similar investments in order to be competitive on the EV marketplace. Tesla.

Stellantis has not yet revealed which factories the revamped models will build, although it said it anticipates that both plants will add another shift following the overhauls. That means that they will continue to work nearly round the clock.

The Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid minivans are currently being built at the Windsor facility. At Brampton, they build the Chrysler 300 sedan and Dodge Charger sedans, and the Dodge Challenger coupe.
