President Joe BidenOn Tuesday, we reacted to the following: leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinionThat would reverse Roe V. Wade by calling for elected officials to defend women’s right of abortion in America.

“I think that women’s rights to choose are fundamental. Roe “has been the law in the land for nearly fifty years. Basic fairness and stability demand that it is not overturned,” Biden stated in a statement.

Biden called on the Senate to elect “more prochoice Senators” and the House to elect a majority of pro-choice members to approve federal legislation to guarantee the right to abort.

A day later, the Democratic president made his statement. a bombshell report by PoliticoAccording to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, a draft of an opinion indicating that the court had voted in favor of overturning the Roe V. Wade decision (which is almost 50 years old) and another that affirms that abortion has constitutional rights was published.

Biden stated in the White House statement that “we don’t know if this draft is authentic, or if it reflects the Court’s final decision.”

“I want to make clear three things about the Supreme Court cases. First, my administration argued strongly before the Court in defense of Roe v. Wade. We said that Roe is based on ‘a long line of precedent recognizing ‘the Fourteenth Amendment’s concept of personal liberty’… against government interference with intensely personal decisions.’ “

Biden stated that he directed his Gender Policy Council (White House Counsel’s Office) to create options for an Administration response against the continuing attack on abortion rights and reproductive rights.

“When any ruling is made, we will be there.”

Biden said also that Roe will be overturned by Supreme CourtThe responsibility for protecting a woman’s freedom to choose will rest on the elected representatives of our country at all levels.

It will be up to voters this November to elect pro-choice representatives. To codify legislation at the federal and state levels, we need to elect more prochoice Senators. Roe, He said, “which I will work for to pass and be signed into law.”

Biden did not mention that he supported ending the Senate’s 60 vote threshold (known as the filibuster rules) in his statement to support legislation protecting abortion rights.

Biden is under pressure to support a move “to blow up the filibuster”, as it’s called in Washington. This has happened since it was clear that any challenge to Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban by Mississippi would be decided by Washington’s Supreme Court and that Roe’s protections would either be weakened or eliminated completely.

Although Biden might agree to pass the amendment to the filibuster to allow the Senate to pass a bill that enshrines abortion protections into law, it’s unlikely that he will get the necessary 50 votes from the Senate.

The Senate being evenly split between Republicans, Democrats and Independents means that all 50 senators would have to support filibuster Reform and an Abortion Protection Bill.

West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin voted in opposition to the one-year plan this spring The Women’s Health Protection Act (or the Women’s Health Protection Act) was introduced as a test bill to see how a Democratic abortion protection bill would perform among Democrats.
