(Reuters) – The Republican-leaning States of Ohio and Indiana held nominating primaries Tuesday. Voters will choose their party’s candidates for Congress and other office, shaping the field for November 8th midterm elections.

These are the four most important Ohio contests:

J.D. VANCE V. JOSH MANDEL

As Trump contemplates another White House bid, this contest for the retirement of Republican Senator Rob Portman will be a highly publicized test of his ability to mold the Republican field to Trump’s liking.

Trump endorsed J.D., which reshaped the crowded race. Vance is the author of “Hillbilly Elegy” and venture capitalist. He was an incoming politician who had previously been trailing others candidates. Ohio Republicans believe that Vance’s criticisms of Trump in the past could have an impact on the chances of the party holding the seat in November.

Josh Mandel is Vance’s main rival and ex-U.S. Marine who was also a former treasurer of the state. Mandel had previously been considered to be the front-runner before Trump’s endorsement. Mandel supports Trump’s falsified claims of electoral fraud, just like Vance.

Jane Timken (former chair of the state Republican Party); Mike Gibbons the banker; and Matt Dolan the wealthy senator, who acknowledges that Biden was legitimately elected.

TIM RYAN’S SENATE BID

U.S. Representative Tim Ryan has been favored to win Democratic endorsement, beating Morgan Harper who is a progressive lawyer and tech executive Traci John.

Ryan represents Youngstown since 2002. He has earned a reputation for being a moderate on economic and social issues, but a centrist in the area. This contest is likely to be a difficult one against the Republican nominee from a state which has drifted steadily towards the right in the last decade.

GOVERNOR MIKE DAWINE FACES CHALLENGERS

Two challengers to incumbent Republican Governor Mike DeWine are former Rep. Jim Renacci (who lost in 2018’s U.S. Senate race) and Joe Blystone, a farmer. DeWine is expected to win the primary, as he did in 2018.

DEMOCRATIC DULLE: BROWN V. TURNER

A rematch will take place between Shontel Brown, the incumbent representative in Ohio’s Cleveland-based 11th district congressional district and Nina Turner who lost in last year’s special election. The race was seen by the Democratic Party as a proxy fight between Turner’s progressive wing and established figures who favored Brown.

It is highly likely that the victor in this primary will win November.
