PORTAU-AU-PRINCE – A leader of Haiti’s feared 400 Mawozo gang that abducted a group American and Canadian missionaries last year has been extradited by the Haitian Police.

After 17 missionaries were kidnapped and held in captivity for two months in October by the 400 Mawozo gang, it made headlines worldwide. In recent weeks, they have clashed in gun battles that forced thousands of residents to flee their homes.

“Germinejoly (aka ‘Yonyon) was extradited by the United States of America to be held aboard a Special Aircraft (FBI), after a request from the U.S. judiciar authorities for judicial aid,” Haiti’s National Police stated in a statement.

Joly had been held in Haiti for some time before being kidnapped by the missionaries. He now faces US charges regarding weapons smuggling, and the “ransoming of American citizens,” according to the statement.

The strength of Haiti’s gangs has increased since President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in July. Many areas of Haiti are now under the control of government officials.

Dominican Republic sought assistance from Haitian authorities to locate a diplomat that had been missing since Friday. He appears to be kidnapped.

Dominican agricultural attache Carlos Guillen “apparently was kidnapped last Friday” while driving from Port-au-Prince to the Dominican border town of Jimani, the office of Dominican President Luis Abinader said in a statement.
