TAIPEI (Reuters – Taiwan’s Defence Ministry stated Tuesday that delivery of Stinger antiaircraft missiles, which are shoulder-fired and fired by Stinger missiles, could be delayed. The ministry said they were pressing the United States for delivery on time as the war in Ukraine is putting pressure on supplies.

These missiles are highly sought after in Ukraine where they have been used to keep Russian aircraft away. However, U.S. supply has shrunk significantly and the production of anti-aircraft weapons is facing significant challenges.

In 2019, the United States authorized sale to Taiwan of 250 Stinger missiles by Raytheon Technologies (NYSE) in 2019. According to Taiwanese media, Taiwan is expected to deliver the missiles by 2026.

Chu Wen-wu (deputy head of Taiwan’s army planning division) said that these deliveries could be delayed.

“It’s true, due to changing international circumstances, there may be some delay delivery this year for the portable Stinger missiles,” said he at a press conference. “The Army will work with the U.S. to coordinate their full procurement plan, and they must continue to insist that it be implemented in compliance with the contract.”

Sun Lifang, spokesperson for Ministry said that General Dynamics Corp (NYSE) M1A2 Abrams tanks procurement was normal. Taiwan intends to purchase 108 units and have them delivered by 2027.

He said that Taiwan’s Air Force is in contact with the United States to make sure F-16 fighter planes are delivered on time before 2026.

This week, the ministry warned again about delayed delivery of U.S. arms.

After being informed by the United States that an “overcrowded” production line would delay the delivery of an artillery systems, the United States said Monday that it was looking into alternative weapon options.

Taiwan is being claimed as China’s territory by China. To defend itself against an attack from China, Taiwan has begun a program of military modernisation.

U.S. officials push Taiwan to modernize their military to be a “porcupine” for China.
