FRANKFURT, Reuters – Volkswagen’s Cariad said Tuesday that it would source chips from the U.S. semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm (NASDAQ:). This will enable the development of autonomous driving software. The German automaker is relying on this chip supplier as the foundation for its future strategies.

Qualcomm will supply SoCs for Cariad’s platform, which aims at enabling automated driving upto Level 4 standards. The car can manage all aspects of driving in almost any situation without the need to be supervised by humans.

Financial details weren’t disclosed.

Volkswagen chief executive Herbert Diess announced on LinkedIn, “We will obtain system-on chips (SoCs),” to enable automated and assisted driving functions upto Level 4. Qualcomm, an expert chip design company with more than 140,000 patents is the source.

Diess stated that the chips from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Rider portfolio would be used in all Group cars with the unified Cariad Software generation beginning in the middle decade.

Volkswagen, Europe’s most important carmaker would expand its current partnership with Intel Corp (NASDAQ)’s MobilEye, and was already in negotiations to do so.

Following a dispute between labour representatives and Diess, Diess was elected to take over Cariad’s responsibility on the management board of the carmaker. He called it the “most ambitious Project in the industry” that would allow the company to tap into future profit streams.

Diess replied to Cariad delays reports: It would take two lifecycles for the project to be realized. “So, I want to say to those critics in the group: It is better to collaborate on progress rather than complain.”
