Its firing comes a week after North Korea pledged to speed up its development of nuclear weapons.
This launch marks North Korea’s fourteenth major weapon testing this year. The event occurs just days before South Korea’s newly elected president Yoon Suk-yeol begins his term on May 10.
It was not possible to immediately provide details about the projectile including flight range and altitude. The Japanese Coast Guard indicated that it might be a ballistic missile.
Kim Jong Un was the North Korean leader and pledged to accelerate his country’s nuke arsenal development. He also supervised an enormous military parade, as the denuclearisation talks remain deadlocked with the United States.
