In April, the U.S. economy experienced strong job growth of more than 400,000 thanks to hiring efforts in transportation, manufacturing and warehousing.

Last month saw the creation of 428,000 new jobs in the U.S. the Labor Department reported FridayThis is the same as in March. It follows a jump from 714,000 to February and 504,000 to January.

In the first quarter of the calendar, 55,000 manufacturing jobs were added, which was the highest one-month jump in job growth.

According to government economists, the bulk of manufacturing’s gains were due to hiring in durable goods factories. Wood product producers added 3,600 positions, machinery makers tacked on 7,400 and businesses that craft transportation equipment — including motor vehicle parts — added 13,700 jobs.

Marty Walsh, Department of Labor Secretary, praised the positive job growth in recent years and recognized manufacturers’ strong performance.

“We’re seeing [strong numbers in] the manufacturing sector – we saw some great growth, we’re very happy about that,” Walsh told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” Friday morning. There was also some positive news in retail. It wasn’t just in online, it was also evident in stores.

Walsh’s boss President Joe Biden is coming to Cincinnati this Friday to encourage advanced manufacturing. Biden is also expected to comment later on the administration’s efforts to expand domestic production in future years.

The April increase in employment for retailers who sell and market goods to American consumers was 29,200.

Retail employment figures have fluctuated in recent years because of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as government-imposed lockdowns. However, they are susceptible to seasonal shopping patterns. To prepare for busy holidays, stores tend to increase staffing in fall and winter and to reduce payrolls during the spring and summer.

While the Labor Department attempts control seasonal variations, retailers’ gain of 29,200 is still its best April job performance since 2014.

In the fourth month 2022, leisure and hospitality saw a net increase of 78,000 jobs. This includes restaurants, hotels and amusement parks. Restaurants and bars saw 43,800 new jobs. Hotels and lodging businesses gained 22,300, while performing arts and spectator sport businesses created 13,300.

Although there have been steady monthly job growths, leisure and hospitality employment is down by 1.4million, or 8.5% since February 2020.

Transport and warehousing saw a strong month with 52,000 job growth. This industry is being closely monitored for possible supply chain relief. According to the Labor Department, 17,000 new jobs were created in warehousing, storage, and couriers. 13,000 more trucks moved, while 4,000 more people flew.

The February 2020 levels of employment in transportation and warehouse are 674,000 higher than the February 2020 levels. Strong growth has been seen in warehousing storage, couriers and messengers since Covid-19 was introduced to America.

Due to the large number of gains in “ambulatory care”, which includes both private and public doctors and dentists offices, 34,000 payrolls were added to by the health and social sector.
