(Reuters) – The Michigan State Police has taken the ballot tabulator from a small community about an hour west Lansing. Officials said that the investigation into unauthorized access to election equipment is expanding into other areas of the state.

The Barry County clerk confirmed earlier reports that the state police invaded Irving Township Hall and confiscated its ballot-processing table.

After the February disclosure of an investigation in Roscommon County by the state, this raid shows how state police expanded their search for potential data breaches and possible voting machine thefts into another county.

“As more information became available, we expanded our areas to determine if other locations were compromised,” stated Lieutenant Derrick Carroll of Michigan State Police. He declined to speak on Irving. “We’ve been to other areas.”

Jamie Knight, Irving Township Supervisor said that the tabulator in the town was taken by the Attorney General Dana Nessel and the State Police “pursuant a search warrant”.

Knight stated that the Township would fully cooperate with law enforcement and that the Township lawyers had been in touch with the Michigan State Police about this matter in an email statement. He declined further comment.

This seizure is the latest in a long line of possible voting equipment hacks. Reuters last week reported eight attempts at unauthorized access in five states to vote systems since 2020. These were all made by Republican party members or local officeholders who promoted false allegations of voter fraud and conspiracy theories regarding rigged voting machines.

Jocelyn Benson Secretary of State requested that the Michigan investigation be launched. She disclosed in February that an unidentified party “allegedly had inappropriate access tabulation machines, data drives used to Richfield Township or Roscommon County”, but did not provide any details.

Richfield Township officials are reticent to speak out.
