OpenSea’s Discord Server Hacked

The leading NFT marketplace, OpenSea, is under attack, as hackers compromised the platform’s Discord server. OpenSea is currently investigating the vulnerability and warns users that they should not click links on their Discord channel.

The platform’s Discord channel was hacked in order to promote a scam which appeared just hours ago on Friday, according to various reports on Twitter (NYSE:).

As seen in the screenshot, the hackers published a fake “important announcement”, which advertised a fraudulent OpenSea partnership with Youtube, and the upcoming release of a limited edition NFT minting pass, of which there would only be 100 copies.

Pass holders will be allowed to free mint NFTs, according to the message. They would need to first mint the Youtube Genesis Mint Pass via the given link.

It was later found that this URL address led to a fake website. PeckShield, a blockchain security firm, warned people not to open the URL.

The company warned users: “Scammers may steal your private key, trick you into giving them token approval or buying scam tokens, etc. Please, stay away from it!”

OpenSea has yet to comment on the details of how their Discord server was compromised. The platform’s support team merely stated that they were investigating a potential vulnerability in Discord, and asked users not to click any links in the OpenSea Discord server. Users have temporarily been unable to access the Discord channel where these fake messages were posted.

NFT frauds are a popular topic within the cryptocurrency space. To promote NFT minting or token airdrops, many NFT projects and trusted social media accounts are compromised.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club was hacked a few weeks back via their official Instagram account and Discord account. This attempted to lure people to NFT scam websites. The attack resulted in the theft of at least 54 BAYC NFTs.
