GENEVA, (Reuters) – Norman Foster, a renowned British architect will plan Ukraine’s rebuilding from the destruction caused by Russia’s invasion. Officials said Friday as they described the activities of a United Nations taskforce that coordinated the project.

Kharkiv (Ukraine’s second-largest city) will lead the campaign. Foster and Mayor Ihor Tenekhov said this via videolink presentation in Geneva.

Foster stated that Foster was given an incredible opportunity to blend the best and most loved parts of a city with the “city of the future”, which has been described by him as “an extraordinary opportunity”. Foster is the architect of London’s Gherkin tower and Hong Kong’s futurist HSBC headquarters.

Terekhov stated that the goal is to create unique neighborhoods and high-tech industrial areas in order to give the city an entirely new look.

According to him, “About 25% is destroyed in Kharkiv because of Kharkiv’s bombings,”

Also, infrastructure, buildings administrative, schools, kindergartens, and other areas will need to be rebuilt.

Kharkiv’s masterplan, officials say could become a template for other Ukrainian cities, was launched last month.

Russia’s 11-week-old invasion of Ukraine has left thousands dead, more than 1 million displaced, and destroyed many towns and villages.

Moscow refers to its actions against Ukraine as “special operation”, meaning it is an attempt to arm Ukraine and safeguard it from fascists. According to Kyiv, and Western supporters, this pretext is used by Kyiv to launch an unprovoked war against aggression.
