REUTERS/Lucas Jackson/File PhotoLOS ANGELES (Reuters), A man, 23, accused of tackling Dave Chappelle on the stage in a comedy performance pleaded guilty Friday to four misdemeanors and was instructed to avoid the famous comedian.
Local media reported that Isaiah Lee, the suspect in this case, was held under $30,000 bail during a short hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court.
According to local media, Lee was told by the judge that he must stay within 100 yards of Chappelle, 48.
The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, which brought the charges against Lee, couldn’t be reached immediately for comment. Lee was also represented by a public defender who could not immediately be reached.
Lee was charged for misdemeanor battery, possession with intent to attack with a weapon and two other misdemeanors. According to a Gascon spokesperson, Lee was not charged by the Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon because his conduct didn’t meet the criteria for a felony.
California law allows a misdemeanor to be sentenced up to one year in jail. Los Angeles has two prosecutor bodies: the district attorney for felonies and the city attorney for misdemeanors.
The police say that Chappelle was at the Hollywood Bowl performing on Tuesday, when Lee attacked him. Lee, who was trying to flee from the scene, was eventually subdued at the rear of the stage.
After a brief break, Chappelle was back on the podium and continued the show with ad-libbing humors about the incident. He appeared not to be hurt.
Representatives of the comedian stated Wednesday that they were fully cooperating in the investigation by police.
