(Reuters) – Yelp (NYSE:) Inc. Amazon.com Citigroup include a growing list of businesses that offer policies to pay for American workers who have to travel outside of the United States for abortions.

Yelp Inc. is one of the companies that first offered support to employees traveling out of state to obtain abortion. The company claims this decision was made in order to guarantee equal healthcare access for all its workers.

Yelp, a crowd-sourced site for reviewing businesses (restaurants and hotels), launched this month to offer the U.S. employee a healthcare travel benefit.

“I think it really comes down to equal access to care. In order to safeguard employees and make sure that they can get the healthcare that they need, no matter what state they live in, we need a benefit like this,” Miriam Warren, Yelp’s Chief Diversity Officer told Reuters.

Yelp, Citigroup Levi Strauss & Co (NASDAQ:), and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:) all have pledged to cover employees’ travel expenses to get abortions, while Oklahoma and Texas clamp down on access.

Walmart (NYSE:) Inc. are some of the largest employers. Target Corp (NYSE 🙂 Walt Disney (NYSE.) Co. has declined to comment on the publication to Politico this week, of a draft Supreme Court opinion which would invalidate its 1973 decision legalizing abortion in all 50 states.

There is an increasing trend for Republican-led governments to sanction companies that take positions on social problems. This could make some people nervous.

In April, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was a rising star of the Republican Party. He signed a bill stripping Disney’s self-governing authority in its Orlando-area parks. This was in response to its opposition of a state law that restricts the teaching of LGBTQ topics in schools.

After Citigroup Inc (NYSE 🙂 offered to cover travel expenses for workers seeking abortions, dozens of U.S. House Republicans demanded the removal of Citigroup Inc.

This issue is now more urgent than ever, as 31 states have passed abortion bans for this year according to the policy analysis of Guttmacher Institute.

Yelp is one of many companies that offers support to workers who might need to travel outside the state in order to get an abortion. This will give Yelp an advantage over other companies and help them attract and keep talent. Investors also like Yelp’s social responsibility.

“For companies who care about issues of diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging, they can’t sit by and be silent on this issue because it really does impact every aspect of a woman’s life,” said Yelp’s Warren.

However, speaking out about social issues could lead to customers or employees being dissatisfied with the company.

Izzy Kushner of HR Impact, president, stated, “Companies should carefully navigate such issues in order to avoid offending both internal stakeholders as well the external community.”
