Digital sovereignty: Reclaiming your private data in Web3

According to the Fair Data Society, “We are workers in the data economy.” Our personal data — basically, the digital blueprint of our lives — gets collected by platforms we interact with, most often in a non-transparent way. It is at best used to enhance our user experience. Our privacy is at worst compromised, monetized or even used against us.

All of this began with the rise and expansion of user-generated websites. These social media sites were free and search engines recognized a potential profit opportunity. Companies and search engines started to collect, store, analyze, and sell user data. Data market size had risen tremendously by 2022. According to StatistaBy 2020, 64.2 zettabytes had already been consumed, stored, and made available online. This number will rise to 180 zettabytes by 2025.
