LONDON (Reuters – Chelsea supporters arrived at Stamford Bridge after a deal was made to purchase the club by private equity. They welcomed the possibility of stability, but were concerned about the motives of the new owners.

In the wee hours of Saturday, Chelsea stated that the terms were reached with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ part-owner Todd Boehly. Clearlake Capital was backed over a 4.25 Billion pound deal ($5.2 billion) for the European champions.

Roman Abramovich, Chelsea’s current owner, put the club on the market in March following Russia’s invasion and occupation of Ukraine. The British government approved the sale.

Jeff Oakley has been a Chelsea fan since 1969. However, he said he was hopeful that the new owners would keep investing money in Chelsea, but wanted to know more about their plans.

Oakley stated, “At end of the day…they’re not here because of their love for the club. They’re here because of the money.” As he approached the stadium to watch Chelsea’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to the BBC, new owners of Chelsea have pledged not to sell their majority stake until 2032. They also gave assurances about dividends and debt.

Martin Farrier is a Chelsea long-term season ticket-holder who said that he preferred to have a British owner.

“But it’s because the Americans seem to have ran Manchester United into the ground. And I would hate for this to happen here,” said he.

United is owned by the Glazer family of Florida, who have been in control since 2005. However, they have encountered fan opposition ever since their takeover.

Chelsea are England’s best-known club, having been the most successful since Abramovich acquired Londoners in 2003. Recent weeks have seen a decline in form due to the controversy surrounding their ownership.

Chelsea lost out in the Champions League to Manchester City, and they are now well behind Premier League leader Manchester City. The FA Cup final against Liverpool next Saturday offers Chelsea one last shot at silverware for the season.

Ferdinand Weiss (22-year-old Austrian student) came from Austria to visit Chelsea to view the team.

Weiss stated, “It is good to bring some stillwater into the situation.”

Concerning the question of changing ownership, he stated that it was not possible to find a solution for a club this large in an increasingly profitable world like sports business.
