As leaders from the Group of Seven democracies made a pledge Sunday to ban or phasing off Russian oil imports, they also met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy the president of Ukraine for an online meeting to express their support and show unity among Western allies in celebration of Victory in Europe Day. This day marks the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945.

According to the G-7, the U.S., Britain and Canada as well as France, Germany and France said cutting Russian oil supplies would “hit hard at President Vladimir Putin’s main artery” and reduce his ability to generate the income he needs for war.

“We will make sure that this happens in a timely, orderly manner and with sufficient time for other supplies to be secured,” the two added.

The leaders reflected on World War II and stressed the need for unity. They also stated that Putin cannot win.

They said, “We owe this to the memory all those who fought in the Second World War for freedom, to continue fighting today for it for the peoples of Ukraine, Europe, and the global community.”

Call between President Joe Biden of the United States and G-7 Leaders and Zelenskyy lasted around an hour.

New sanctions were also introduced by the U.S. against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine. The new sanctions included the removal of Western advertising from Russia’s three largest television stations as well as a ban on U.S. accounting or consulting firms providing services to Russian clients.

The White House issued the sanctions prior to the May 9 Victory Day. Russia is known for its large-scale military parades that celebrate Nazi Germany’s defeat of 1945.

Putin is scheduled to address Red Square troops Monday and talk about the special military operation it has in Ukraine.

American and European allies sought to counter the message that Putin was further isolating Russia and doing great harm to its economy.

The new round of U.S. sanctions will hit three of Russia’s most popular television stations in Russia – Channel One Russia, Russia-1, and NTV — that the U.S. has said have been at the forefront of spreading misinformation about Russia’s prosecution of the invasion.

Biden’s administration stated that the sanctions against U.S. accountant and consulting companies doing business in Russia would help Russian corporations and elites to avoid getting aid to conceal their wealth and dodge an avalanche if sanctions.

Additionally, the U.S. stated that it had placed approximately 2,600 visa restrictions upon Russian and Belarusian officials. It also issued a new policy to restrict visas for Russian military officers and officials.

U.S. sanctions 27 Gazprombank executives. This bank facilitates the sale of natural gas by Russia’s Gazprom. These sanctions mark the first time the U.S. sanctions have been applied to the bank. However, this move is not as severe as the blocking sanctions the U.S. has imposed on other major Russian banks.

Officials from the U.K. announced that Britain would provide additional military support for Ukraine, worth 1.3 billion pounds (or $1.6 billion), to assist the country in its defense against Russian aggression.

British government reserves provided the funding. It includes 300million pounds of military kits, including radar systems that target Russian artillery and GPS jamming gear.

Justin Trudeau was surprised to visit Ukraine as Canada’s Prime Minister. Trudeau visited Irpin in northern Ukraine, after it had suffered extensive damage from Russia’s attempts to take Kyiv. On Sunday, Trudeau was photographed by Trudeau and posted photos to social media. Trudeau said that he was stunned at the civilian home destruction.

Trudeau’s Office later stated that Trudeau was in Ukraine for a meeting with President Zelenskyy. This would allow Trudeau to reaffirm Canada’s support for the Ukrainian people.

Jill Biden made an unexpected visit to Ukraine on Sunday. She met with Olena Zelenska, first lady of Ukraine. Biden went under the veil of secrecy to visit Ukraine, where he is the most high-profile American during the 10-week-old war against Russia.

Zelenska heard that the U.S.’s first lady wanted her to visit on Mother’s Day. “I felt it was important that I show Ukraine that this war must end and has been brutal. The people of America stand by the peoples of Ukraine.”

Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated in a broadcast address that Sunday was “a May 8, like no other”.

Scholz stated that Germany had worked hard to admit its mistakes during World War II and has made reconciliation with Ukraine and Russia, and committed itself to “never again.” Scholz explained that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in february was an act of barbarism and brought back war to Europe. It seemed impossible once again.

“Freedom and security will prevail — just as freedom and security triumphed over lack of freedom, violence and dictatorship 77 years ago,” Scholz said in his address.

German Bundestag President Bärbel Bas, the second-highest-ranking German official after the president, met Sunday with Zelenskyy in Kyiv and attended a memorial event honoring the anniversary of the end of World War II.

“We really appreciate that on the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation itself, and in what for us is such a trying time of war, the President of the German Bundestag Bärbel Bas came to support Ukraine,” said a post published Sunday on Zelenskyy’s Telegram channel.
