Max Verstappen took an aggressive approach on Formula One leader Charles Leclerc, and then won the first Miami Grand Prix to claim his third season victory.
Red Bull won the second race in succession, beating Ferrari by a quick margin. Carlos Sainz Jr. and Leclerc had occupied the first row of qualifying for Ferrari. Verstappen, however, pounced on the start to move ahead of Sainz.
Leclerc was his next target and he used an outside pass to take the lead on the ninth lap. Verstappen was unchallenged, until Lando Norris’ late collision with Pierre Gasly set him up for a sprint of 10 laps to the finish.
Leclerc had a couple of looks in the car, but Verstappen was determined to win by 3.7 seconds. Red Bull also won him at Imola two weeks before, capitalizing on the poor Ferrari weekend in Italy by giving Verstappen and Sergio Perez a 1-2 result.
Ferrari finished second in Miami for Leclerc, while Sainz was third. Perez finished fourth in Red Bull’s race. Mercedes made significant improvements with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Russell is now the seventh-time winner. This marks the fourth win in five races for Russell.
Lance Stroll, Montreal was 12th. Nicholas Latifi, Toronto was 14th.
Although the race was thrilling, it wasn’t what the 85,000 spectators expected from Sunday when they grabbed one of the most coveted tickets in sports. Due to the high demand early on, promotors never managed to sell general tickets. Hard Rock Stadium’s campus was the scene for parties over the past three days.
F1 received the Miami backdrop and sun it sought when it entered into a 10-year agreement.
Celebrities were everywhere on race day. Dwyane Wade snapped selfies at the start grid, while Paris Hilton performed in front the McLaren garage. Tom Brady, David Beckham, and Michael Jordan took a picture pre-race with Lewis Hamilton. Lewis Hamilton hosted ex-first lady Michelle Obama Saturday at the track. Serena Williams took advantage of Mercedes’s hospitality. Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican rapper, arrived at McLaren with Perez. Perez spent much of his pre-race period at Red Bull.
Miami will be the US’s first F1 season with two races, as it has done since 1984. F1 will make Las Vegas a third American F1 race by 2023.
