Amazon fires two employees tied to Staten Island union effort

AmazonTwo employees were fired in connection to an organizing campaign which resulted the first U.S.-based unionized warehouse.
CNBC reported that Tristan Dutchin and Mat Cusick were both fired from Amazon recently. Cusick, Dutchin and the Amazon Labor Union have been working together to organize employees at New York’s Staten Island’s Amazon warehouses.

Dutchin claimed that Amazon had previously warned him about his performance but that he was now receiving additional training. Dutchin claims that his manager recently complimented him on his recent performance.
Cusick is the ALU communications director. He said that he was fired after going on “Covid Care leave,” which allows employees and family members to take care of Covid-19-sick relatives.

Cusick explained that an employee of Amazon’s human resource department granted him leave to travel until April 29. Cusick claimed that Amazon sent him an email on April 30 stating that he had been absent for three days and was therefore eligible for dismissal.
Cusick discovered that he was locked out from Amazon’s employee portal the day after he began sorting packages to be delivered at DYY6 in the Amazon warehouse near JFK8.
Cusick said “I called ERC”, referring to employee resource center. He said “What’s the matter? It looks like I have been fired.”
His statement was, “I believe the first person could have said I wasn’t terminated.” I went to China, India and a number of different U.S. teams, each with a different view on the situation.”
