WASHINGTON (Reuters] – On May 10, the Republican-leaning US states of Nebraska, West Virginia and South Dakota will hold primaries for U.S. House of Representatives seats and other office offices.

These are some notable races that may influence the November 8 midterm elections, when Republicans seek to take control of Congress.

WEST VIRGINIA 2ND CONGRESSIONAL DITRICT

Two incumbent Republican U.S. Representatives could face another challenge due to former President Donald Trump’s endorsements. The polls show a close race between Alex Mooney who is supported by Trump and David McKinley who was endorsed West Virginia Governor Jim Justice.

Because West Virginia’s House is shrinking, the incumbents will be facing each other. Because the 2nd District is strongly Republican, it’s likely that the nominee will win the election.

NEBRASKA GOVERNORSHIP

Trump’s endorsement strength will be put to the test again in Nebraska’s Republican gubernatorial primaries. Charles Herbster, who Trump-backed, was accused of sexually assaulting several women including one state senator. Herbster is a farmer executive who has denied these allegations.

Although recent polls of public opinion have been mostly influenced by political campaigns and not independent pollsters (and they are still very much in line with the Farm Bureau’s endorsement), they do indicate a potential competitive race between Herbster, University of Nebraska Regent Jim Pillen and Herbster.

Republicans are expected to win the November election.

NEBRASKA 2ND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

The district’s center is Omaha, which is the largest city in the state. Republican Don Bacon has held the 2nd congressional district since 2017.

Although Bacon will not face any stiff competition internally in May, Alisha Shelton and Tony Vargas are the Democratic Party primaries. Vargas has spoken out in support of banning assault rifles and Shelton said he will work to increase access to the vote.
