(Reuters) – The Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News was awarded to the Miami Herald Monday by the award administrator for covering the fall of a condominium tower that had been built high and claimed the lives of 98.

The Pulitzer Prize for national reporting was awarded to The New York Times because of its coverage on fatal traffic stop by police.

Pulitzers, the highest esteem award in U.S. journalism, are given annually.

Since 1917 the Pulitzer Prizes have been awarded. Joseph Pulitzer was an influential newspaper publisher who left money in 1911 to start Columbia University’s journalism school and established the prizes.

Four awards were given in journalism and four in letters, drama and education. They also received five scholarships for traveling. They now honor fifteen categories of media writing, photography, and reporting. There are also seven books, drama, and music awards.

The judging panel that selects winners is overseen by a board consisting of senior editors from leading U.S media outlets and academics.
