(Reuters) – Police in Wisconsin set fire to the office of a conservative anti-abortion group on Sunday. This was days after news broke that the Supreme Court could reverse a historic decision that guaranteed abortion rights across the country.
The Wisconsin Family Action office released a statement blaming an “leftist, anarchist” group for the graffiti that also stated “if abortions don’t safety, then you shouldn’t be either.”
Madison Police Department claimed it was conducting an investigation into Sunday’s arson fire. It also stated that local fire departments quickly extinguished the flames. No suspects were identified by the Madison Police Department, and no injuries have been reported.
According to police, a molotov cocktails was placed inside the building. However, it did not catch fire. The police stated that a second fire had been started as a response.
Wisconsin Family Action states on their website that it promotes “JudeoChristian principles.” It promotes the abstinence education in secondary schools and supports marriage as “between one and one woman”. It also says that it opposes abortion-supporting laws.
Draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito, a conservative, was published by Politico on May 2. It would support a Mississippi law that prohibits abortions within 15 weeks after pregnancy. This will also overturn 1973 Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States.
This leak sparked a political storm, with pro-lifers staging protests at various locations across the country. There was also an internal crisis at America’s highest judicial institution, where investigations into the cause of this unprecedented disclosure are ongoing.
This leak occurs months before the November midterm election in which voters will vote for their representatives.
