WASHINGTON (Reuters] – U.S. Senate Republican Leadership Mitch McConnell urged Biden’s administration Tuesday to reconsider their nomination of Alvaro Bedoya as privacy expert to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. It could have extended the Democrats’ inability of taking control of that agency.

McConnell stated that Bedoya was an “essentially foolish” choice in a speech on the floor. He said this after the American people gave him a 50-50 Senate. Both sides must stop this horrible nomination. The president should reconsider the matter and we can send somebody else.

McConnell stated that Bedoya had publicly criticised police amongst other claims. Chamber of Commerce is also opposed to the nomination.

Votes for the nomination may be open as early as Wednesday

Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that Bedoya was required on the 5-member commission, now at 2-2 between Democrats/Republicans. This is to allow the agency’s investigation into oil companies Democrats claim are “gouging” customers with high gasoline prices.

A tie vote cannot be considered as an action by the commission.

Bedoya, a Georgetown University law professor, was once chief counsel for the U.S. Senate Judiciary section on privacy technology and law.
