REUTERS/Siphiwe Sibeko/FilesCAPE TOWN (Reuters) – South Africa’s metalworkers’ union has declared it will go on strike Wednesday at ArcelorMittal South Africa Ltd (NYSE:) South Africa Ltd. This is after talks between the management and themselves over salary increases fell apart.
According to the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, (NUMSA), it issued a 48-hour strike notification Monday in compliance with labour regulations.
NUMSA demanded a 10% increase in the overall wage, housing allowance and a contribution of 80% to medical aid from the employer.
Africa’s top steel producer, majority owned in part by ArcelorMittal SA (located in Luxembourg), has offered only 5% for all tiers, according to the union. They also rejected the proposal.
ArcelorMittal representatives were not available immediately for comment.
