(Reuters] – Florida Judge Ron DeSantis argued Wednesday that Florida’s proposed new congressional map violates the Constitution by reducing Black citizens’ vote power.

Circuit Court Judge J. Layne Smith stated that the legislative map passed at DeSantis’ request “diminishes African Americans’ right to vote for the representative they choose” in a northern Florida district, in violation the state constitution.

Smith said he intended to issue a form order Thursday or Friday removing the map. This would be likely to be appealed.

In a lawsuit, voting rights groups challenged the map. The suit was focused on Al Lawson (a Black Democrat) as the current U.S. Representative.

DeSantis supported the map, which eliminated the district and gave Republicans the advantage in all 20 of its 28 U.S. Congress seats. This gives Republicans an important boost in their bid to take back control of the U.S. House of Representatives during November’s midterm elections.

DeSantis (who is up for reelection) is considered a possible front-runner to the Republican nomination for 2024.

The governor previously rejected maps passed by lawmakers and directed the legislature to convene a special session in order to adopt new boundaries.

DeSantis appointed Smith to the current post.
